The Dockyard Railway, Chatham

Operating Dates and Special Events - 2009

Scheduled Operating Days

The Dockyard Railway will be operating in 2009 on the dates listed below.

Operations normally consist of a locomotive-hauled rake of freight wagons hauled through the Dockyard by locomotives from our fleet. Savour the atmosphere of train working - a bonus for photographers too!

Services will be operated by steam traction whenever available, but diesel locomotives may be used occasionally in the event of a shortage of steam locomotives.

Special Occasions - Round-Trip Footplate Pass

Do you have a relation or friend that has a steam background - perhaps a retired B.R. Driver, or someone who worked with industrial steam during their working lives - or someone who is just interested in the experience?

We can help you revive memories of days gone by.

If you plan to visit Chatham`s Historic Dockyard when the Steam Railway is operating, and contact us in advance, we can arrange a footplate pass, which would allow the recipient to participate in a round trip of the railway on the footplate.

We do not charge for the footplate passes, but at the end of the trip, you may wish to make a voluntary contribution to our locomotive restoration fund. Note however, that it is also necessary to pay the normal entrance fee to the Historic Dockyard for access to the site and the steam locomotives.

If you would like to arrange a footplate visit for someone, please write to:

C.H.D.R.
24 Manor Street,
Brompton,
GILLINGHAM,
Kent.
ME7 5AW.

....with details of the recipient and the date you intend to visit the Historic Dockyard. Please enclose a stamped, addressed envelope.

Special Steaming Days

Special steaming days can be arranged for larger parties, for example:

- Photographers

- Retired Drivers footplate reunions.

- Steam preservation clubs.

- Model railway clubs.

- Birthday parties, weddings, other celebrations.

All special steaming days are subject to authorisation and will be charged at a set rate, by the Historic Dockyard Trust. If you are considering a special steaming day, and would like further information, please write to the address shown above with details of your requirements. Please enclose a stamped, addressed envelope. Thank-you.
